AquiSense Technologies of the UK developed the new UV-C LED module and was selected to participate in the European Union-funded Bio-contamination Integrated Prevention and Control Research System (BIO WYSE) project. This is a bio-integrated control system program for space exploration that will create an ecological control system that can be self-sufficient when humans explore the space universe. AquiSense's products will be used for drinking water purification, disinfection and decontamination on the International Space Station.
The BIO WYSE Project Alliance consists of seven companies, one of which is AquiSense. The alliance also includes Thales Alenia Space, the main supplier of the International Space Station. The BIOWYSE project is actively building a compact ecosystem of prevention, monitoring and mitigation modules on the International Space Station for future space personnel. AquiSense is responsible for the key technologies in the design of the decontamination module, using the UV-C LED module system to disinfect the water.
The company's assigned project product manager is Dr. Richard Simons. AquiSense has previously successfully launched PearlAqua, a UV LED module product in the field of drinking water disinfection. However, UV disinfection technology for space needs more innovative designs, not only to replace traditional UV lamps, but also to ensure that the products are smaller, higher quality and more durable.
The BIOWYSE project is expected to develop and demonstrate integrated biological pollution control systems for waters and wetlands and will be demonstrated in the International Space Station and future human exploration missions. The BIOWYSE project is derived from actual flight experiments, prevention status, monitoring and mitigation techniques, and will further investigate the potential for by-product development in the terrestrial water management industry.
According to Dr. Jennifer Pagan, CTO of AquiSense, the new UV-C LED module installed on the International Space Station has advanced drinking water filtration and disinfection technology to ensure the clean and safe drinking water of space astronauts.
It is reported that the project has been funded through the EU's Vision 2020 Research and Innovation Project, with a total project funding of 3 million Euros for two years.
