On the afternoon of May 28th, Beijing time, NBN, the main body of the construction and operation of Australia's national broadband network, has abandoned plans to provide 100Mbps broadband packages for fixed wireless customers.
According to ABC, the company’s chief executive, Bill Morrow, announced the move at a Senate budget hearing last week.
Morrow said that the development of a constant 100Mbps network speed for hundreds of thousands of customers in the fixed wireless coverage of the national broadband network would cost "billion to billions" of dollars and would not be economically viable.
It is estimated that by 2020, Australia's national broadband network will have a fixed wireless coverage of approximately 600,000 locations, up from 230,000 today. NBN spent nearly $2 billion to deploy nearly 2,000 towers.
Nevertheless, according to the statistics provided by NBN, the fixed wireless service of the national broadband network has been plagued by congestion problems, and the network speed in some areas has dropped to below 3 Mbps during peak hours.
NBN has been committed to providing network speeds of not less than 50 Mbps for most of Australia and a network speed of not less than 25 Mbps across Australia.
The solution may come in the form of 5G. Morrow said the company is experimenting with 5G technology.
