According to Memes Consulting, Mobileye and STMicroelectronics announced that they will jointly develop Mobileye's fifth-generation system chip, EyeQ5, as the central processor for fully automated driving (FAD) vehicles in 2020, and implement sensor fusion procedures.
In order to achieve power consumption and performance goals, EyeQ5 will be designed with 10nm node or less FinFET technology, multi-threaded 8-core CPU, plus a new generation of 18-core Mobileye vision processor.
All of these technology improvements will increase performance by eight times compared to the current fourth-generation EyeQ4. The EyeQ5 consumes less than 5W and can achieve more than 12 trillion operations and passive cooling per second. Engineering samples for EyeQ5 are expected to be available in the first half of 2018.
EyeQ5 continues the long-term cooperation between Mobileye and STMicroelectronics. With extensive experience in automotive design, STMicroelectronics will provide EyeQ5 with state-of-the-art physics implementations, dedicated memory and high-speed interfaces, and system-in-package design to ensure that the EyeQ5 is certified to the highest automotive standards. STMicroelectronics will also support the design of safety-related product structures.
"The EyeQ5 is designed as the central processor for future fully-automated vehicles," said Professor Amnon Shashua, chairman, technical director and co-founder of Mobileye. It will have a computing density that can handle approximately 20 high-resolution sensors simultaneously. It can provide increasingly improved functional safety. EyeQ5 is the inheritance of Eyeye technology developed by Mobileye since 2004. With a deep understanding of computer vision processing technology, the original system architecture is highly optimized to achieve less than 5w. Extraordinary computing power under power consumption and passive cooling in automotive environments."
Marco MonTI, executive vice president and general manager of the automotive and discrete devices division at STMicroelectronics, said: "Every generation of EyeQ technology has been recognized by drivers, and STMicroelectronics has also started with the first generation of EyeQ1, proving that we are manufacturing, designing and The value of collaborative R&D. Through our joint efforts with the industry-leading 5th Generation Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) chips, we will continue to provide drivers with a safer and more convenient smart driving experience."
technical details
The patented EyeQ5 accelerator core is fully optimized, such as computer vision, signal processing, machine learning tasks and deep neural networks. EyeQ5 is heterogeneous, fully programmable accelerator, and the four types of accelerators built into the chip are optimized by its family of algorithms. The versatility of the accelerator structure allows each application to perform the different tasks, selecting the most suitable accelerator core, saving computation time and power. This optimized configuration allows the EyeQ5 to provide "supercomputing" capabilities in a low-power package, as well as economical passive cooling. With its focus and deep understanding of the ADAS and autopilot markets, Mobileye has increased its investment in programmable amplifier families in a number of specific areas.
Automated driving has never been more functionally safe. EyeQ5 meets the highest level of safety for automotive applications (ASIL B(D) according to ISO 26262).
Based on the integration of hardware security modules, Mobileye has established the EyeQ5 security defense system. This enables system integrators to provide support for wireless software updates, in-vehicle information security, and more. The basis of information security comes from its encrypted storage devices.
EyeQ5 will provide automotive manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers with a full suite of hardware acceleration algorithms and applications for automated driving. At the same time, Mobileye will also provide a car standard operating system and a complete software development kit (SDK), allowing customers to embed their algorithms into EyeQ5 to achieve differentiated personality solutions. The software development kit can also be used for prototyping and development of neural networks, as well as for accessing Mobileye's pre-trained web application layer. Structural elements such as hardware virtualization and full cache coherency of the CPU and accelerator make EyeQ5 a convenient open source software platform.
Automated driving requires the fusion of dozens of sensors, including high-resolution cameras, radar, and lidar (LiDAR). Sensor fusion requires simultaneous acquisition and processing of sensor data. To achieve this goal, EyeQ5's dedicated IOs system supports a minimum of 40Gbps of data bandwidth.
EyeQ5 is equipped with two PCIe GEN4 interfaces for inter-processor communication, which can be used to connect EyeQ5 to application processors or to connect multiple EyeQ5 devices for system expansion.
Four 32-bit LPDDR4 channels operating at 4267MT/S meet the system's high computing power and data bandwidth requirements.
Supply Capacity
EyeQ5 engineering samples are expected to be available in the first half of 2018, and the first batch of EyeQ5 with full application and software development kit (SDK) is expected to be available in the second half of 2018.
