According to reports, at present, among all countries in the world, the United States still has the highest energy consumption in air-conditioning equipment. As of 2016, 40% of the total installed power of all air conditioners in the world is in the United States. The energy consumption of 328 million residents in the United States is higher than the total cooling energy consumption of 4.4 billion residents in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia (excluding China) .
According to reports, however, the United States will soon be replaced by China, because the energy consumption of the United States in air-conditioning equipment is now only a moderate increase, while China's energy consumption in air-conditioning equipment has surged.
The report pointed out that as of now, the explosive growth of the number of air-conditioning equipment in China has exceeded that of any other country. In other regions with hot climates, the number of air conditioners is also growing rapidly. In the past, air conditioning was very rare in these places. For example, since 1990, India ’s energy consumption in refrigeration has increased 14-fold.
According to reports, on a global scale, the annual energy consumption of air-conditioning equipment accounts for about 10% of the total annual human electricity consumption. The production of this electricity for air-conditioning equipment will significantly increase the climate-changing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
According to the International Energy Agency, carbon emissions from refrigeration have tripled since 1990, reaching 1.13 billion tons in 2016, close to Japan ’s total carbon emissions that year.
The International Energy Agency predicts that if the global refrigeration boom is allowed to continue without control, by 2050, the above number may triple. By then, the global air conditioning energy consumption will be equal to China's current total electricity demand. According to the International Energy Agency, if no measures are taken to increase the efficiency of air conditioning or more renewable electricity is used to generate electricity, the facts may prove that this has a disastrous impact on global carbon emissions.
