Philips Lighting: Selling more than 2 billion LED bulbs by 2020

On June 3, the global lighting leader Philips Lighting (AEX: LIGHT) led the team to meet with the energy ministers of the 7th Clean Energy Ministerial Summit (CEM7). Philips Lighting made a commitment at the conference to sell more than 2 billion LED bulbs by 2020. The energy and pollution reduction achieved by this goal is expected to be equivalent to the total electricity generated by about 60 medium-sized thermal power plants by 2020 and the total emissions generated by 24 million vehicles. At the same time, Philips Lighting also reaffirmed its commitment to achieve carbon neutrality worldwide by 2020. As an important step, it is hoped that by the end of 2016, it will realize the full adoption of renewable energy in its operations in the United States.

Under the mechanism of the World Clean Energy Ministerial Conference, member states work together to accelerate the development of global clean energy. Bill Bien, head of global strategy for Philips Lighting, said: "Philips Lighting will implement the commitments made at the 21st UN Climate Change Conference (COP21). Energy conservation is the first step in tackling climate change, and implementing energy conservation commitments is not only conducive to environmental protection. It is also conducive to the development of the global economy. It is estimated that by 2020, the economic benefits of energy conservation can reach about 12 billion euros. This fund can be used to help other areas of development. The goal is clear and time to wait."

Philips Lighting's solemn commitment strongly supports the “Global Lighting Challenge” launched at the 21st UN Climate Change Conference in December 2015 and the Clean Energy Ministerial Conference. The action plan aims to promote the spread of 10 billion efficient, high quality, cost-effective light bulbs (such as LED bulbs) globally to address global climate change.

Committed to achieving carbon neutrality

At the 7th Clean Energy Ministerial Conference (CEM7), Philips Lighting called on other companies to meet the challenge and build a carbon neutral company. At the 21st UN Climate Change Conference, Royal Philips promised to fully use renewable energy by 2020 to achieve carbon neutrality in its operations. Philips Lighting reaffirmed this commitment at this year's Clean Energy Ministerial Meeting and shared its successful experiences in addressing these challenges with other organizations and companies.

The key to achieving carbon neutrality is the use of renewable energy and lower carbon emissions from operations and logistics. Philips Lighting shared its carbon neutral operation experience in the US at this conference – thanks to a power purchase agreement with the Hidalgo wind farm in McCook Texas, Texas, Philips Lighting is expected to At the end of the year, it will achieve full carbon neutrality in its operations in the United States.

“We have been delighted to see that Philips LED bulbs and smart connected lighting systems can save up to 80% energy compared to traditional products. At the same time, we also have to take responsibility for carbon emissions in our operations, so Philips Lighting Committed to achieving carbon neutrality in the company's operations by 2020. In order to fulfill this commitment, we will re-examine every job including business operations, production processes and supply chain. I am very happy to tell you that this work is progressing. Very smooth: Last year our global renewable energy use rate reached 60%,” Bill Bien said.
