Intel: 5G will unlock the potential of the cloud, bringing huge business opportunities to the vertical industry

From June 28th to July 1st, the 2017 World Mobile Congress (MWCS 2017) was held in Shanghai. At the conference, Lin Yiyan, vice president of Intel Data Center Business Unit and general manager of 5G Network Infrastructure Department, shared her views on 5G and explained the indispensable role of network transformation and MEC in driving to 5G. Important role, and believe that the realization of 5G will release the overall potential of the cloud and bring unprecedented business opportunities to the vertical industry.

Massive data and diversified application-driven networks accelerate transformation, paving the way for 5G development

In the 5G era, it is necessary to transform the carrier-based communication network that is human-centered in the 2G, 3G, and 4G eras to a broader network-centric, instant-response, and intelligently interconnected network. The processing needs of massive data and more complex and diverse application scenarios drive the network to accelerate transformation. In the 5G era, telecom operators will not only usher in a new round of mobile Internet, but also have the opportunity to participate in the construction of new applications and business models such as the Internet of Things and the Internet of Vehicles. Therefore, operators are eager to accelerate network transformation and hope to build a more open, flexible and intelligent network through more advanced, easy-to-use and flexible cloud computing technologies.

Intel sees that the transformation of the network has begun, computing begins and communication is integrated, and the network will integrate the communication, computing and storage "trinity." NFV (Network Function Virtualization) and SDN (Software-Defined Network) are key technologies that meet the flexible business needs of various industries. In fact, they use computing to solve communication problems.

MEC is the backbone of network transformation and will become a must for the 5G era.

MEC is becoming the driving force of network transformation. By sinking the core functions of the network to the edge of the network and providing IT services, environment and cloud computing capabilities close to the mobile client, it can meet the low-latency and high-bandwidth business needs of the 5G era. . At the application level, MEC can provide customized and differentiated services to vertical industries to improve network utilization efficiency and value.

MEC seamlessly connects the network and the cloud, and will become a must for the 5G era. In the 5G era, the application of MEC will extend to many fields such as transportation systems, intelligent driving, real-time tactile control, and augmented reality. At the same time, due to the openness of the architecture and platform, MEC can also be deployed on the LTE network at this stage to provide value-added services for mobile operators.

Generalization and IT are the cornerstones of building a 5G platform

The 5G platform must first be a common platform for resource virtualization and functional reconfigurability. This allows operators and other users to have full freedom to build new applications at the upper level based on new business needs.

In addition, 5G also needs to realize the IT of the platform. Today, operators have both departments that build communications infrastructure and business units. The former is only responsible for allocating frequency bands and bandwidth, while the latter is more concerned with business models and profit maximization. Therefore, Intel often plays a "translation" role between the two, so that the two departments can establish sufficient trust, so that the platform can meet the requirements of 3GPP and meet the needs of IT.

Deep farming 5G needs to give the Internet of Things a cloud platform

In Intel's view, the Internet of Things will be one of the first areas of the 5G era. Unlike existing communication systems, the ecosystem of the Internet of Things is more complex. If you use a communication system directly, it will become very challenging. However, if you give the Internet of Things a cloud platform, since most IoT systems use the x86 platform, moving from one x86 platform to another is just a matter of changing the wireless access point, and the migration will be more difficult. The amplitude is reduced.

From a cloud perspective, Intel is matching the types of services provided by the cloud with customer needs, including speed, latency and bandwidth, all just right, no more. Therefore, the highest level has a cloud, and then the cloud should be pushed as close as possible to the end users, ensuring that the established network must be soft and flexible, so that it has a good adaptability to different types of cloud services. Discover the potential of the cloud completely. In the future, the network will be divided into different parts according to the needs of different applications (some require high bandwidth and some require low latency). Only the networks used in each area are tailored to make better use of resources. To achieve this goal, you must give the Internet of Things a cloud platform to maximize its flexibility.

Smart terminal devices will become countless mobile, cloud-converged data centers

Our vision for the future of 5G networks is to create a standard network. In the future, each of us will be followed by a data center. Each terminal will be the network node of tomorrow, and the form of this network node is a data center, and it is a cloud-based, cloud-networked data center.

Take unmanned driving as an example. Unmanned driving will generate massive amounts of data, which requires unmanned vehicles to collect data at an unprecedented rate and analyze massive amounts of data in the cloud. By providing unparalleled high bandwidth and low latency, 5G can support "V2X (Vehicle to X) applications such as automotive-based cloud-based artificial intelligence and data, as well as key security features through wireless updates. (Immediately address cybersecurity threats) and “communicate” with road cars and other transportation infrastructure, including street lights. In the future, our car may turn into a wheeled data center like today's mobile phones.

Intel believes that 5G is a new starting point, an industry revolution that integrates wireless connectivity, computing and the cloud, and will meet our expectations for an upgrade to the entire industry. 5G will bring cloud business opportunities to telecom operators and major vertical industries, unlocking the overall potential of the cloud and bringing the multiplication effect of “communication X computing X vertical industry”. Intel is working with all parties to explore network transformation, promote MEC commercial deployment, and accelerate the path to 5G.

At this World Mobile Conference, Intel and China Unicom, Nokia Bell and Tencent jointly demonstrated the first commercial deployment solution for MEC (MulTI-Access Edge CompuTIng) intelligent venues for 5G networks; ZTE jointly demonstrated the latest research results based on container technology to support NFV application micro-services, and jointly built the Cloud NaTIve era to explore the path of carrier network transformation.
