STMicroelectronics: Automotive MEMS Market Share Reduced from 50% to 20% after Five Years

At the MEMS executive conference held in Europe, Carmelo Papa, executive vice president of STMicroelectronics, stressed: "The market and opportunities for MEMS are still high. At present, automotive electronics has a 50% market share." And it is estimated that five years later, automotive electronics will only have 20% of the MEMS market.

Carmelo Papa presented a series of slides at the conference, focusing on how ST's MEMS market has gradually increased as smartphones and tablets use inertial sensors and microphones. Carmelo Papa said that in 2012, while striving for the leading position in the MEMS component market, ST entered the automotive electronics field where the system has been relatively complete. At present, automotive electronics owns 50% of the MEMS market.

He also stated that "In addition to automotive electronics, ST has a dominant position in the MEMS component market." He estimated that five years later, due to the rapid growth of the consumer electronics and medical electronics industries, automotive electronics will only have 20% of MEMS. market.

Carmelo Papa mentioned in his speech: "The rise of ST as a general MEMS IDM supplier is still very rapid. Excluding OEM companies for HP, ST's MEMS sales climbed from $30 million in 2006 to In 2011, its sales have reached 650 million U.S. dollars."

Carmelo Papa pointed out that the main trend this year is the fusion of data from multiple MEMS sensors on a single device, enabling both membrane MEMS and microfluidic MEMS to function in diagnosing and treating MEMS. In addition, the next step is to create low-cost, low-power wireless devices for the Internet of Things. “In the next two to five years, the integration of sensors, low-power wireless devices and MCU technology will be realized, leading to a new wave of personalizedization,” said Papa.
