Korean LED manufacturers surge in sales due to demand for LCD TVs

The position of Korean manufacturers in the LED market is rapidly rising (Figure 1). In the third quarter of 2009, sales of LED units of four large Korean LED manufacturers (Samsung Motors, LG Innotek, Seoul Semiconductor and Lumens) reached 2.3 times that of the same period of the previous year and increased by 26% from the previous quarter to 436.7 billion won. The total sales of the nine large-scale Taiwanese LED packaging manufacturers in the quarter increased by only 14% compared with the same period of the previous year. In comparison, the growth rate of Korean manufacturers is even more significant. At present, not only notebook computers, but also TV LCD panels have begun to adopt LED backlights. With the increase in the share of Korean manufacturers in the LCD TV market, sales of Korean LED manufacturers have also increased.

Korean manufacturers will account for more than half of the increase in capacity in 2010

Among Korean manufacturers, Samsung Motors has the largest sales growth. It is about 5 times of the same period of the previous year. The company established a Samsung LED (Samsung LED) in April 2009 with Samsung Electronics. Although the capital contribution ratio is 50%, Samsung LED is a subsidiary of Samsung Electric. In 2009, Samsung Electronics launched a comprehensive LCD TV (LED TV) equipped with LED backlights, and the supply for this product became the pillar of Samsung LED's business.

LG innotek and Seoul Semiconductor achieved sales growth in LEDs for laptop backlights. In the LCD panel market for LEDs with increasingly obvious LEDs, Korean LCD panel makers (Samsung Electronics, LG Display) have a share of more than 60%. The growth of the notebook market has directly led to sales growth of LG innotek and Seoul Semiconductor. . The number of LEDs used in one TV is more than 10 times that of one laptop. Therefore, both companies have set the TV market as the next target. LG innotek will start mass production of TV LEDs in the fourth quarter of 2009 from the fourth quarter of 2009.

Following Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Sharp, Sony and major TV manufacturers have also begun to fully develop LED TV business. It is expected that LED TV supply will increase in 2010. Daiwa Cathay Capital Markets predicts that global LED TV shipments will be 38.5 million units in 2010, about 10 times that of the previous year. As the market is expected to expand rapidly, it is imperative for Korean LED manufacturers to increase production capacity. Samsung LED and LG innotek plan to introduce 100 MOCVD (Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition) devices in 2010. If this plan is realized, Korean manufacturers will account for more than half of the global LED capacity growth in 2010. (Contributing author: Koda Katsuyuki, Yamato Cathay Capital Markets)
