HTC has just announced via Twitter that the new version of the HTC Vive will be available at the CES conference and its resolution will increase. Although it seems that HTC will not position it as "Vive 2," we can expect the following for "Vive 1.5" that will be unveiled next week.
The current Vive model was initially launched in 2016, and a monitor with a single-eye resolution of 1080×1200 was produced by Samsung. Samsung released their PC VR head Xuan Long MR at the end of 2017. The device uses a monitor with a single-eye resolution of 1440×1600, and HTC is likely to use the same monitor in Vive 1.5.
The upgraded Samsung display seems to be the most likely component of HTC Vive, but another option that can play an important role is not only to increase the resolution: Vive 1.5 may adopt the latest monitor and lens technology that Valve announced in 2017. The company said that the new calibration software can achieve low-cost LCD displays and can act on high-end VR heads.
This may help Vive compete with Rift in price (Rift is currently priced at $400, while Vive is $600). Valve said that the same optics can also be used with OLED displays, but they are usually more expensive. The company is marketing related technologies to SteamVR, such as Vive.
SteamVR positioning 2.0?Vive's room-scale tracking system uses Valve's SteamVR positioning technology (formerly Lighthouse). In 2017, Valve released information on "SteamVR Tracking 2.0", and it is expected that the new technology will reduce costs and optimize performance, including greater tracking volume.
It is difficult to determine if Vive 1.5 will use SteamVR Tracking 2.0. On the one hand, this is logical, and in particular this will allow HTC to further reduce the cost of the head-up display (supplied SteamVR Tracking 2.0 is said to have fewer components, a more streamlined design, and lower production and support costs). This will be a great help for HTC, because HTC is mainly a hardware manufacturer, and they are financially caught in a certain predicament.
On the other hand, this may require a major transformation of the production process, and if HTC chooses to launch heads with the SteamVR Tracking 2.0 base station, this will not be compatible with the original Vive, so positioning it as Vive 2 will appear more reasonable .
Vive 1.5 may not be equipped with SteamVR Tracking 2.0; or Headset and controller with SteamVR Tracking 2.0 sensor, but continue with 1.0 base station.
The latter option will ensure backward compatibility with SteamVR Tracking 2.0 base stations, ensuring that all base stations in the ecosystem can support the current Vive (because SteamVR Tracking 2.0 base stations only support 2.0 sensors, but 2.0 sensors support 1.0 base stations). In this way, tracking system fragmentation can be avoided before Vive 2 is marketed.
Knuckles controller?Another worth looking forward to is the controller, that is, whether Vive will use Valve's "Knuckles" controller made its debut last year. We look forward to seeing Vive 1.5 with a new controller because it is said that this is a big step forward for the current Vive "wandstick" controller.
But from a marketing point of view, the new controller will make people feel this is "Vive 2", especially because they are not only ergonomically optimized, they also bring such functions as finger tracking. Therefore, Vive 1.5 may not work with Knuckles controllers.
It is exciting to see the new version of Vive unveiled, especially since Oculus stated that it will not release the Rift 2 generation in 2018. No matter what kind of product HTC will eventually announce, I believe we will get more news at the CES conference next week.
