Diodes Introduces 100V Linear LED Driver with Clutter Removal

Diodes introduces the AL5801 Linear Light Emitting Diode (LED) driver, which simplifies the interior of the car, the signage and general lighting control circuitry with just two additional components. This small, SOT26 package integrates a 100V rated N-channel MOSFET into a pre-biased NPN transistor that can drive a link consisting of up to thirty 20mA to 350mA low-power series LEDs.

The AL5801's open-drain output operates from 1.1V to 100V and supports the popular 12V, 24V, and 48V rails. The LED current is set by an external low-value resistor. By generating a 0.56V reference across the resistor, the driver's internal control transistors help reduce power loss and ensure adequate supply voltage.

Based on the negative temperature coefficient of the reference voltage, the output current is automatically reduced as the temperature rises, thereby protecting the LED link from damage and effectively improving the overall reliability of the circuit. In addition, the AL5801 operates over a wide temperature range of -40°C to +150°C and can be mounted directly next to the LED with limited printed circuit board space.

For applications that require simple LED dimming, the driver can drive its biased tube with pulse width modulation (PWM) signal through an external open-collector NPN transistor or an open drain N-channel MOSFET. The bias pin supports the regulation of the PWM output current.
