The report said, however, that the United States will soon be replaced by China, because the US energy consumption on air-conditioning equipment is only a modest increase, while China's energy consumption on air-conditioning equipment has surged.
The report pointed out that as of now, the explosive growth of the number of air-conditioning equipment in China has surpassed that of any country. Air conditioning is also growing rapidly in other hot climates, where air conditioning was rare in the past. For example, since 1990, India’s energy consumption in refrigeration has increased 14 times.
According to the report, on a global scale, the annual energy consumption of air-conditioning equipment accounts for about 10% of the total annual human consumption. Producing this energy for air conditioning equipment will significantly increase greenhouse gases that change the climate in the atmosphere.
According to the International Energy Agency, since 1990, the carbon emissions from refrigeration have tripled, reaching 1.13 billion tons in 2016, close to Japan's total carbon emissions that year.

By then, global air conditioning energy consumption will be equal to China's current total electricity demand.
