Breakthrough hyper lens or will make AR / VR display caps become light

Although modern AR and VR display headpieces have been reduced in both volume and weight, this work has become difficult due to the optical relationship. The lenses used in the headgear need to focus on the entire visible spectrum and white light, but since the wavelength of each light is different, this problem becomes tricky.

Blu-ray wavelengths pass through the lens slower than the red wavelength, so they cannot reach the eye at the same time, and the consequence of this is color aberration. The current solution to this problem is to use multiple lenses of different thicknesses, materials, surfaces and processing methods, which means that the display headgear needs to be made large.

Recently, researchers from the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Science at Harvard University believe that they have found a solution to this problem by using metal lenses. A hyper-lens is a plane that uses nanostructures to collect light to avoid the appearance of color aberrations. Although the super lens is not a new technology, it was first discovered that it can handle the entire visible light range.

Research team members stated that the ultra-thin lens is very thin, it is also very easy to manufacture, and the cost is low. This breakthrough can cover the entire visible light range.

The key to making this kind of hyper lens is surface treatment. Titanium dioxide thin film arrays are used to focus light wavelengths by controlling the height, shape, width, distance, and re-pairing of these thin films to achieve controlled refractive index. In this way, all the wavelengths of light can reach the eye at the same time at the same time.

The next big challenge the team will accept is how to match the full wavelength that the human eye can see and how to increase the size of the hyper lens. The researchers pointed out that for the latter, the lens diameter needs to reach about 10mm. Right now, Harvard has authorized the IP of this project to a start-up company, so it can be seen that commercialization of this technology is very feasible in the future.
