In a blink of an eye, time has entered 2018, what changes have occurred in Linux in 2017, and what new trends will occur in 2018? OMGUbuntu made eight predictions for Linux's development this year to see if you agree:
Prediction 1: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will be the most popular version in Ubuntu history
Ubuntu 18.04 LTS "Bionic Beaver" is a version with many changes, both for new and old users.
Prediction 2: Snap format will be supported by more software vendors
Snappy already has support from big-name companies such as Microsoft and Spotify. With the continued promotion of Canonical, 2018 will be supported by more software vendors.
Prediction 3: Open source developers will embrace Flatpak
Canonical is busy pushing Snaps on Ubuntu desktops in 2018, but other members of the Linux community will switch to Flatpak and the Flathub App Store. Redhat's influence should help ensure that some big-name apps use the Flatpak package format, and many community developers will choose to distribute their apps via Flathub.
Prediction 4: Ubuntu will dominate the Internet of Things
Ubuntu Core is well-suited to address the evolving challenges of the Internet of Things and standardize on the IoT environment and security.
Prediction 5: PipeWire will be used by more distributions
Fedora 27 has provided a certain level of PipeWire support, and other distributions will follow up, using PipeWire to improve their processing of audio and video.
Prediction 6: Linux market share will increase, but the number will not be too high
No explanation.
Prediction 7: Linux battery management will improve
In 2018, everyone began to focus on and improve the life of Linux laptops, using improved graphics drivers, kernel features, and adjustments to the desktop environment to eliminate background processes.
Prediction 8: 2018 may not be a year for the Linux desktop, but it may be a year for Linux laptops
We will see more and more pre-installed Linux notebooks, in addition to large brand manufacturers such as Dell, Lenovo, HP, and other OEMs including Slimbook, Station X and Entroware will also provide more products.
